From shopping bags to a town-wide campaign
In 2018 Sustainable Woodstock joined the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Communities programme and began working with residents, shops, cafés, workplaces and community organisations to reduce avoidable single-use plastic.
The aim is practical rather than purist. Plastic is useful in many settings; the problem is the throwaway culture around products and packaging designed to be used once and discarded.

What makes the biggest difference
Remove items nobody really needs: disposable cutlery, stirrers, sachets and unnecessary packaging.
Choose cups, bottles, bags and containers that stay in circulation instead of swapping one disposable material for another.
Make it easier to top up water and other products without buying another container each time.
Where packaging is unavoidable, use materials with clear, practical local recycling routes.
For businesses and organisations
A good starting point is simply to look at what comes through the door. Which single-use items can disappear entirely? Which can be replaced by a reusable system? Which depend on suppliers changing what they offer?
Small changes add up: tap-water refills, reusable-cup incentives, no default disposable cutlery, larger catering packs instead of individual portions, reusable delivery crates and clearer recycling for staff and customers.

Reuse beats another disposable
There is rarely one material that is automatically the “green” answer. Paper, compostable packaging and bioplastics all have impacts and often need particular disposal systems. The strongest principle is simpler: avoid what you do not need, keep useful things in circulation for longer, refill where possible and recycle correctly at the end.
Litter and local pride
Waste reduction starts before something becomes rubbish, but keeping Woodstock's streets and surrounding countryside clean matters too. Sustainable Woodstock supports community litter-picking and works with the Town Council and local volunteers to keep the issue visible.
Help Woodstock use less
If you run a shop, café, school, community group or workplace, or you would like to help with local action and litter picks, get in touch. A useful idea from one organisation can often be copied by many others.
